The main character and the McGuffin

Artificial intelligence also known as AI, has seen a large leap in development in the recent years thanks to language learning models like ChatGPT, Bard, Gemini and Copilot. We have opened the pandora’s box of technology, which will cause drastic changes in the coming years, and start a new era in the technological development in human history, like the personal computers or internet. Many people, like ”tech bros” are cheering for the development of AI for the good of humanity, and some even believe that AI will save the world, although it’s not necessarily the case. Some people hate the AI with passion, and would do anything to fight it. You have seen many Sci-fi movies where AI got rogue and started killing humanity. Although you might think this is one of those films, it is not.

The Creator is a year 2023 Sci-fi movie which takes place in an alternate world where the AI has drastically improved and reached human levels of intelligence. It is used in the civilian life, as well as in the military, which is the main theme of this movie. The AI is weaponized as a weapon in the global geopolitics, and by 2070, the technology is very sophisticated and developed.

Warning: May contain spoilers.

A bipolar world

There is not much said about the world of The Creator, since the only two countries in the movie, are the United States of America, and the New Asia. The United States is a country that doesn’t need any introduction. The United States has an upper hand in the Cold War between the USA and New Asia. New Asia is a superstate uniting all the Asian countries under one flag. The Asian countries under New Asian rule can still use and speak their own languages, but Japanese is the lingua franca of the nation.

New Asia uses the robots in their daily lives, and the robots have better lives in New Asia, rather than in the United States of America. After the LA got nuked, the AI became a taboo in the USA, but they did not ditch the technology though. The United States of America is more skeptical about the AI than New Asia, which is the main reason those two superpowers hate each other in the movie. The USA has also a base on the Moon. In the movie, there wasn’t a mention about New Asia in space. The United States have a large orbital laser which has a high-tech defense system and a large laser that can cause a lot of damage and launch nuclear weapons. The United States in the movie rules the world with fear, which caused a lot of resistance to the country.

Tale of three ”species”

To be biologically nitpicking, robots are not technically a species, but in the film, they are technically like a species due to them thinking like humans. There are actually three species in the movie, humans, robots and simulants. Simulants are like synthetic humans aka Synths. Simulants are created by scanning a human person’s facial features and whatnot, and they are more anthropomorphic like robots. Robots in the other hand are well, robots. Some robots don’t fully have free will, which means some of them just do what they are programmed. The United States in that movie favors humans more than robots and see them just as robots, which was the other reason why the New Asia hates the USA and vice versa.

Quirky plot

The plot of the movie is quirky. The movie follows a regular American soldier, who had been sent on a mission to capture the super weapon of the New Asia, which is a child with powers to control the electronical devices around her. The child is basically the McGuffin of the movie, but more like a character rather than an object. The dialogue in that movie is pretty emotionally captivating, to say, but as a whole, the plot is still kind of quirky due to like a drunken fly trying to fly to the same direction but still derailing all the time. The movie does have some side characters, who appear here and there, but don’t really have screen time in the movie, and they end up being pretty pointless, which is a problem in the movie’s plot. The movie focused too much on the main character, which made some of the other characters fall flat.

Baby McGuffin

As a character, the child is actually not that bad, and actually pretty good. She has powers like an avatar, who can control all the devices, which makes it harder for the New Asia and the United States to capture her. The child actually has a bond with her father, who ends up betraying his home country just for her daughter. For the rest of the movie after he technically betrayed his own country, the United States were just chasing him and the kid.

The beauty of the futuristic dystopia

Oh boy, now we are talking. Visually, the movie is like a big bag of eye candy. There are a ton of details here and there, which makes the movie feel more alive. The daily lives of the New Asians were shown in the movie very well, and the movie had great special effects, like a good sci-fi movie needs. I mean, just look at them. The movie did really have the best visual aspects and details of any sci-fi movie. The movie’s visual aspects are almost as good as in Avatar movies. The robots in that movie were pretty well designed, to be honest. Some of them were straight out of Star Wars, but still, a majority of them looked pretty nice.

Quirky, but great movie

The Creator was one of the best sci-fi movies I have ever seen to be honest. Visually, the movie was eye candy, and the movie had great worldbuilding. But in terms of the plot, the movie was pretty okay. The main character and the McGuffin were good, but the movie needed more screen time for the side characters. The movie’s worldbuilding was so good, that the movie could have a sequel. The sequel should have more screen time for the side characters. The Creator was still pretty thrilling to watch, since although the movie was 2 hours long, you couldn’t really feel the length. So in other words, the movie was quirky, but good.
